Most utility poles are about 40 feet long and about 6 feet deep. Most poles are separated by a minimum distance of around 125 feet in order to prevent any mishaps. In many cases, utility poles may be primarily used by one company for power transmission, but may be leased out to other utility companies like cable or telephone companies, which maximizes the return on investment on these poles.
Multiple usage utility poles are common, where cable and telegraph lines pass along with the power lines, while in most cases, individual poles are used. Most utility poles have special markings or brackets on them in order to enable workmen to climb up the poles for repairs and maintenance as required. The power carrying equipment is perched on the top of the utility poles for safety and this specific area at the top of the poles is referred to as the supply space.
